Light Blue Spinet Desk

I know I have not posted any projects lately... it has actually been a while. I have just been busy catching up with friends and family during the holiday season. Since I know I won't have anything new for a while, I thought I would share some old projects that I have done over the summer. I don't know why this never ended up on the blog, but here it is!

This piece is called a spinet desk. It looks like a table, but the top folds, and opens into a desk. Inside there are little compartments to store things and a writing surface that pulls out. There is also a drawer where you can store supplies like paper and pencils. When the top is shut it looks like a table since everything is hidden... sneaky!

Just note that there is a bug flying by in the picture above. Sorry about that! I do wish we had summer weather still, then I could be cranking out more projects. For not I have to be patient and work slowly....

I bought this desk off of craigslist. It was leftover from a garage sale after it did not sell. Once I got it home I lightly sanded everything down. I chose to paint it a light blue color, but left the inside natural wood. I assumed paint on the writing surface would take more work to keep it clean and nice. After the paint was all dried and cured I gave the painted surfaces a coat of Minwax Paste Wax.

I was definitely sad when someone wanted to buy this lady, but I did end up selling it. After that I decided I wanted one, but they are hard to find and somewhat expensive. I ended up finding one that is dark wood and slight different, but I still love it! You can see it in the background of some pictures from this post. Here is a glimpse at what mine looks like. I got this one off of craigslist for $40 :)

There's also a peak at my headboard, an old paneled door, which I named my blog after (since it was my first project). Maybe I will show it one day... Anyway, I have to say I liked the legs on the blue spinet desk more than the one I have, but I like that this one is different. And if you are wondering, I do not plan on painting my spinet desk. I need some unpainted wood pieces in my room to keep me sane, and dark wood is my favorite. I love painted furniture, but in moderation.

  2. Oooooh. I have that desk! I was told by the antique lady that it was a lady's writing desk. But a Spinet Lady's Writing Desk sounds good. It was the first desk I bought in my married life. Mine is mahogany (I don't think I could ever bring myself to paint it) and it has a small wooden arm that swings out to hold an inkwell (which came with the desk). I love it mostly for the legs.
